Brazil, US Tariff
International News: US President Donald Trump has issued an order to impose a 50 percent import duty on Brazil. In his order, he cited the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 and argued that Brazil's policies and the ongoing criminal case against former President Jair Bolsonaro are a threat to US interests.
Earlier on July 9, Trump had written a letter to Brazilian President Lula da Silva and warned of imposing tariffs, although at that time its legal basis was said to be trade imbalance. But according to the data, America's trade surplus with Brazil has been $6.8 billion.
The White House has accused Brazil's judiciary of pressuring social media platforms. However, the companies were not named. Similarities are being seen in the politics of Trump and Bolsonaro. Both leaders are accused of trying to overturn the election results.
Following the tariff order, Brazilian President Lula walked out of a program, saying he had to protect the country's sovereignty in light of US actions. However, the tariff will not apply to all products. Items such as civil aircraft, aluminum, energy products, tin, fertilizers, and wood pulp are exempted. The new tariff will come into effect seven days later and will increase the already imposed 10% duty by 40%.
On the same day, the Trump administration also announced sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes. De Moraes is overseeing the criminal case against Bolsonaro, in which he is accused of conspiring to remain in power despite losing the election in 2022. On July 18, the US State Department imposed visa restrictions on several Brazilian officials, including de Moraes.
